Going out with kids in Montpellier (0–8 years): complete guide

Montpellier benefits from an ideal Mediterranean climate for families. Between a free zoo, beaches and parks, here are our best outing ideas.

When it rains

Planet Ocean (Odysseum)

Giant aquarium combined with a planetarium, an exciting two-in-one outing. Tropical fish, penguins and shark tunnel amaze children. Everything is indoors, stroller accessible, with a covered picnic area for breaks.

Végapolis Ice Rink

Large covered ice rink with family-dedicated time slots. Double-blade skates and penguin supports help little ones glide safely. Soft music atmosphere in the afternoon, to discover ice skating while having fun even in rainy weather.

Émile-Zola Media Library

Modern library in Antigone with a vast youth space. Picture books, educational games and play mats available for toddlers. The perfect place to take shelter when it rains: warm among books, with quiet corners for nursing and adapted facilities.

When the sun shines

Lunaret Zoo

Free open-air zoo with lions, giraffes, bears and immersive aviary. Shaded paths through Mediterranean forest, bring the stroller as the grounds are vast. Playground and educational farm at the end of the route, much appreciated by little explorers.

Parc Montcalm

Large sports and wooded park, former military ground converted to children's paradise. Several playgrounds by age, tracks for cycling or rollerblading and large fields for ball games. Easy access and parking, a must for sunny weekends.

Palavas-les-Flots Beach

15 minutes from the city, a fine sand beach for building castles year-round. Stroller-friendly seafront promenade, numerous playgrounds along the coast and carousels in summer. Even without swimming, the sea air pleasantly tires children.

For toddlers

LAEP Le Baobab (Antigone)

Baby Café 34

Family café recently opened downtown, designed at child height. Features a well-equipped nursery corner (changing tables, bottle warmer), motor skills modules for babies and even parent-baby workshops (musical awakening, baby yoga). All in a warm atmosphere around good coffee or fruit juice.
